Surrogacy
A Hopeful Path to Parenthood
Surrogacy is a fertility treatment in which a woman — called the surrogate mother — agrees to carry and deliver a child for another couple or individual, known as the intended parents.
After birth, the child is legally handed over to the intended parents, who will raise and nurture the baby as their own.
How Does Surrogacy Work?
In most surrogacy cases, the eggs of the intended mother are fertilized with the intended father’s sperm through IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).
The resulting embryos are transferred into the surrogate mother’s uterus, where the pregnancy develops naturally.
The surrogate mother is not genetically related to the baby — she simply carries the pregnancy on behalf of the intended parents.
Surrogacy can also be performed using donor eggs or donor sperm when required, but at least one intended parent must contribute genetic material, as per Indian surrogacy guidelines.
After a successful pregnancy, the surrogate mother gives birth and hands over the child to the intended parents with all the necessary legal formalities.
A surrogate can be:
A family member or relative
A close friend, or
An unrelated volunteer, either compensated or altruistic (unpaid), in accordance with legal regulations.
Who needs surrogacy?
Surrogacy may be recommended in the following situations:
Uterine or Structural Issues
Absence of uterus (by birth or due to surgery)
Severe uterine problems such as multiple or large fibroids
Severe adenomyosis
Damaged or scarred endometrium (uterine lining)
Medical or Health Conditions
Serious health risks where pregnancy may endanger the woman’s life (e.g., heart or kidney disease)
Reproductive Challenges
Repeated miscarriages or recurrent fetal loss
Repeated IVF failures despite good-quality embryos
Other Indications
Single males or intended parents unable to carry a pregnancy themselves

How IVF Works with a Surrogate Mother
Legal Agreement
After meeting and mutual consent, the intended parents and surrogate enter a legally approved agreement as per Indian surrogacy regulations.Cycle Synchronization
The menstrual cycles of both the intended mother and surrogate mother are synchronized.Treatment for the Surrogate Mother
Hormonal injections are given to suppress her own egg production, ensuring embryos belong only to the intended parents.
Medications are started to prepare her uterus for embryo implantation.
When embryos are ready, they are transferred to the surrogate’s uterus for pregnancy.
Treatment for Intended Parents
The female partner undergoes ovarian stimulation with IVF injections.
Egg retrieval (ovum pick-up) is done and fertilized with the male partner’s sperm.
The resulting embryos are transferred to the surrogate’s uterus.
Advanced IVF techniques like ICSI, blastocyst culture, and embryo freezing are used to maximize success.
